THE JOURNEY OF THE FABRIC
-
SHOT — FABRIC ROWS, GRAND BAZAAR, ISTANBUL [PLACEHOLDER]
REC 0135MM, DAYLIGHT 01 — ISTANBUL, GRAND BAZAAR
Once a season the wool is chosen by hand in the covered market at Istanbul — by weight, by fall, by how it takes the light. Four hundred to five hundred grams a metre. Nothing under.
-
SHOT — BOLT OF WOOL, CUT TO LENGTH [PLACEHOLDER]
REC 02THE BOLT, MACRO 02 — THE CUT
Each bolt is cut to the length of the orders it will become. The offcuts are kept — they come back as the MAKI scarf. Nothing leaves the table as waste.
-
SHOT — THE ROAD, OVERLAND, ISTANBUL → TBILISI [PLACEHOLDER]
REC 03OVERLAND, DUSK 03 — THE ROAD
From Istanbul the wool travels overland to Tbilisi — a day and a half by road, across one border. What arrives is more than cloth: it has already made the journey the coat is named for.
Made to be kept.
-
SHOT — THE WORKSHOP, TBILISI, RED THREAD ON THE MACHINE [PLACEHOLDER]
REC 04RED THREAD, MACHINE 04 — THE WORKSHOP
In a two-room atelier in old Tbilisi the coat is built one at a time — cut, shaped, lined in its loud colour. The last operation is the red stitch — down the centre-back seam, on the outside, collar to hem, perfectly straight. The red thread is the signature.
-
SHOT — THE STUDIO, PARIS, CHECKING THE SEAM [PLACEHOLDER]
REC 05DAYLIGHT, PARIS 05 — PARIS, THE CONTROL
Every coat travels on to Paris. There it is checked seam by seam — the red stitch may not wander more than two millimetres over the whole back. What passes, stays. What doesn't goes back to the machine.
-
SHOT — FINISHED COAT, HAND-NUMBERED LABEL [PLACEHOLDER]
REC 06INK ON LABEL 06 — THE NUMBER
Numbered by hand inside the collar, by the founder — your number, out of thirty. Then it is folded, wrapped, and sent from Paris. Made to be kept.
